Bruce Cabarle, President and owner of Concentric Sustainability Solutions (CSS)

A lifetime environmentalist, Bruce has built his career around 2014_WRI wall of famefinding creative and entrepreneurial business solutions that will protect forests, communities and our climate for generations to come. Concentric Sustainability Solution clients include the Climate and Land Use Alliance, Forest Trends, Rights and Resources Initiative, the World Bank Information Center and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Prior to joining CSS, Bruce worked for renowned forest conservation and climate NGOs including WWF, World Resources Institute, and the International Institute for Environment and Development.

Early in his career, Bruce recognized that forest conservation must make sense to businesses and local communities if it is to endure. In 1993, he co-founded the Forest Stewardship Council that has now certified more than 182million hectares of forest worldwide. He also played a key role in the development of the Global Forest and Trade Network that works with forest companies and concessions around to world to determine a time bound pathway to certification.

Bruce has worked on the ground in the world’s largest and most important forest ecoregions – the Amazon-Andes and the Borneo and Congo basins – negotiating ground-breaking agreements for financing and certified-product supply chains with local communities, national governments, the World Bank and private sector companies such as IKEA, Wal-Mart and The Home Depot.

Bruce has served on the boards of the Certified Forest Products Council, Metafore, Forest Trends, Tropical Forest Foundation and the National Commission on Science and Sustainable Forestry. As a fluent Spanish speaker, Bruce also was a co-founder of the Central American Commission on Forests and Development and the Consejo Civil Mexicano de Silvicultura Sostenible. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the American Forest Foundation and National Commission for Science & Environment and serves as Director Emeritus on the board of Forest Trends.

Bruce earned his Masters of Forestry from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a B.S. in forest management from Rutgers University.  He is an avid cyclist and resides in northern Virginia where he has quick access to many backroads!  Contact Bruce at bcabarle@concentricsustainability.com.
